Two of our favorite things have been proven to help get you shredded: hot sauce and protein. A Dutch study published in The Journal of Nutrition examined several groups of people who experimented with calorie intake, protein consumption, and supplementing with capsaicin, the active ingredient in chili peppers. Subjects who were on a diet that reduced their daily maintenance calories by 20 percent but who ate high-protein meals and took two capsules of capsaicin (a combined 40,000 Scoville units) at every feeding experienced the greatest energy expenditure. Scientists believe that the combination of protein and capsaicin prevented the metabolic slowdown that usually happens when cutting calories, while it also increased the feeling of fullness, which helps compliancy when dieting
