Not that we could expect anything less after her surprise win at the Bikini International on March 3, but Sonia Gonzales did indeed catwalk over the competition at the MuscleContest Pro in Torrance, California, last night. Displaying a confidence that I didn’t think she had at the International, Sonia pulled off a unanimous win over a lineup of 10 hungry challengers who got onstage at the Marsee Auditorium of El Camino College. Also not so surprising: the unanimous choice of Canadian contender Justine Munro in second. The panel called out just three women to start, Gonzales, Munro and Stacey Alexander, who was coming off a pro debut win at the Dessert Classic in February. After a runway round, they added Narmin Assria and then did a third round with Mary Jo Cooke-Elliot in the group. Comparing the women in every possible order, the panel did not give away its hand.
Though Munro’s physique was not as polished as the others in the group, her easy stage manner—naturally cute and sexy—was very winning, earning her the runner-up finish. Considering that she had to pull out of the International at the last minute due to an injury just a week earlier, she looked pretty good.
Assria had dialed down the more aggressive posing style that got her into the pros and into the top five at the Titans Pro last fall. It was a smart move, helping her slide into third here. She was two points ahead of fourth-placer Alexander.
Fifth went to Cooke-Elliot, with ’11 USA Overall champ Candy Agundez just a point behind in sixth in her pro debut.
Since Sonia earned her qualification at the International, no one new made the Olympia invite list at this event.
