Fish oil has a lot of heart-health benefits, but did you know it can reduce gum disease? That’s according to research done at Harvard Medical School and published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

Echinacea is an herb often believed to boost immunity and fight off colds, but it may relieve anxiety as well. As reported in the January ’11 Better Nutrition, a Hungarian study found that just 20 milligrams of Echinacea angustifolia reduced anxiety by 25 percent in one week.

Lemon juice is a good antiaging solution. The February ’11 Bottom Line Health explains that marinating meat in lemon juice before cooking reduces production of advanced glycation end-products, which are oxidizing compounds that age the body, usually called AGEs.

Mushrooms can improve heart health, according to the November ’10 Prevention, and it’s not just the specialty ones like shiitakes. Extracts from common mushrooms like white button and cremini helped stave off chronic inflammation that can lead to cardiovascular disease.

CoQ10 and green tea are a potent health-building combination, says the November/December ’10 Well-Being Journal: “CoQ10 and green tea are among the best nutrients to retard challenges of aging across the board, from cataracts to circulatory and neurodegenerative conditions.”
