Inflammation is a primary trigger for a number of chronic diseases in the aging population ranging from cardiovascular disease to cancer, Alzheimer’s disease to arthritis, and a number of researchers are pursuing the role of dietary changes in reducing the inflammation response. Lynnette Ferguson, from the University of Auckland, in New Zealand, and colleagues studied 30 healthy men and women who were selected for their initially “poor” diets. The subjects were encouraged to eliminate refined and processed foods and follow a Mediterranean-type diet over six weeks—taking in increased amounts of fish, vegetables, unrefined cereals and so-called good fats such as olive oil and avocado. A prominent feature of the diet was that it was also gluten-free. Recipes were supplied to the participants. After six weeks the team observed that biomarkers of inflammation, most notably C-reactive protein, were markedly reduced.
Eggs Not a Risk
Conflicting studies in recent years report that egg consumption both may and may not be a risk factor for the development of heart disease. Liegang Liu, from Huazhong University in China, and colleagues completed a meta-analysis of eight studies that included 263,938 study subjects for coronary heart disease and 210,404 participants for stroke. All studies followed subjects for up to 22 years, during which 5,847 cases of coronary heart disease and 7,579 cases of stroke occurred. The team found that one egg per day (containing 210 milligrams of cholesterol) was not associated with an increased risk of heart disease or stroke. The lead investigator also comments that eggs are a low-calorie source of nutrients, including minerals, proteins and unsaturated fatty acids, which could lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Some of his past performance records include 13,500 consecutive situps and 321 consecutive handstand pushups. Dr. Goldman was an All-College athlete in four sports, a three time winner of the John F. Kennedy (JFK) Physical Fitness Award, was voted Athlete of the Year, was the recipient of the Champions Award, and was inducted into the World Hall of Fame of Physical Fitness. Dr. Goldman was awarded the Healthy American Fitness Leader Award from the President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports and U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Goldman is Chairman of the International Medical Commission overseeing sports medicine committees in over 184 nations. He has served as a Special Advisor to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports. He is founder and international President Emeritis of the National Academy of Sports Medicine and the cofounder and Chairman of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. Goldman visits an average of 20 countries annually to promote brain research and sports medicine programs.
