Shannon Meteraud did in deed make it two in a row, scoring her second-ever pro-fitness win at the Europa Show of Champions in Orlando, Florida, on April 18. The consistency factor that played such a big role in her win in New York last week, came through once again. This time she took both physique rounds and came in second in the long routines and third in the 45-second mandatories to rack up an 18-point margin of victory.
In assessing the lineup of 15 ladies who got onstage at the Orange County Convention Center, it was easy to pick Shannon-Ball as the favorite. Not so easy to predict was the emergence of Canadian Myrian Capes as the judges’ solid pick for second. Capes has been on the Pump & Circumstance radar for a couple of years. Her performance at the ’07 Fitness O—the first one out at the finals, competitor number one—knocked my knee-highs right off. Since then she’s been in the unenviable position of not getting serious consideration for her routines because her physique wasn’t competitive (admit it, it happens). Until recently, that is.
Reports of Myrian’s conversion to first-callout material both here and in New York, where she landed in fifth, appear to be accurate. Based on photos I viewed at Bodybuilding.com, she was much more smoothly put together than the last time I saw her onstage in person, in September at the ’08 Atlantic City Pro.
Capes’ fellow Canadian, Mindi O’Brien, did some blasting of her own, making up for her 10th-place finish at the Fitness International in March. She edged out a getting-hungrier-by-the-show Erin Riley by three little points to grab the last Olympia-qualifying spot. Tina Durkin rounded out the top five.
One newcomer to watch in this lineup was Ryall Grabber, the ’07 Central American and Caribbean champ. Though largely unknown in the United States, the resident of Bermuda, who’s been working with Adela Garcia and Garcia’s choreographer since turning pro, managed to get some attention from the folks on hand—and the judges—for her routine skills at this show as well as her pro debut in New York. Welcome aboard, Ryall.
