Vitamin D2 is the synthetic form produced by irradiating yeast, while D3 is the natural form found in cod liver oil. In a recent study researchers divided a brood of chicks into three groups: no vitamin D, vitamin D2, vitamin D3. Of those receiving no vitamin D, 60 percent died; of those getting the synthetic D2, 50 percent died; of those getting the natural D3, all lived. If you’re getting your vitamin D from fortified foods, be sure it’s D3, and if you use D supplements, be sure it’s the natural form for best results.
