Dumbbell Exercises for Healthy Rotator Cuff Muscles

www.ironmanmagazine.comQ: I love to bench-press, and to keep my shoulders healthy, I’ve been doing a dumbbell exercise for my rotator cuff muscles—lying on my side, externally rotating my shoulder. Do you recommend any other exercises?

A: Yes, many. I’m not saying the exercise you are doing is a poor way to achieve structural balance, but you should vary the way you apply resistance—such as by using cables—and you should use a greater variety of exercises.

Home-Gym.com sells a book called The 7-Minute Rotator Cuff Solution by Joseph Horrigan, D.C., and Jerry Robinson that will give you some good ideas for developing greater structural balance in your workout. In addition, I recommend that you include exercises for other muscles that help maintain proper upper-body alignment, such as the lower trapezius.
