As normal, I emceed Jon Lindsay’s California State and Pro Figure Championships over the Memorial holiday weekend and, as normal, it was a good show with many of the industry’s major players in attendance.
First off, congrats to Kevin Reeves on his Heavyweight and Overall victories at the Culver City event. Kudos also to Superheavyweight champ Jim Juge (who scored another win in the Masters 40 plus), Lightheavyweight winner Pistol Pete Ciccone, Middleweight champ Lorenzo Reynaga, Welterweight titlist Keisuke Yoshida, Lightweight winner Rene Chavez and Bantamweight victor Noel Frias.
Sonia Adcock followed up her victory earlier in the month to nab the Pro Figure division of the contest; Mary Jo Cooke and rookie Felicia Romero (making her pro debut) qualified for the Figure Olympia with second and third place finishes, respectively.
There were about 130 contestants at the contest, and I ran into NPC Prez Jim Manion, Bodybuilding.com’s Russ DeLuca, JM Manion, Milos Sarcev, Bob Cicherillo and Dennis James, among other big names, at the show.
Speaking of Dennis, guess who else I bumped into? Dennis Newman. Newman said he’s moved back to the place where he was raised, Salinas, California (from Las Vegas) and is doing well in the personal training business. He was proud of his guns– check em out!
Lindsay had me announce that, starting next year, the show will be open to anybody nation wide, so the event should be even better next season. Check out Merv’s pics at www.ironmanmagazine.com.
