Web Surfing for Brain Power

For computer-savvy middle-aged and older adults, searching the Internet triggers key centers in the brain that control decision making and complex reasoning, report Gary Small, from the University of California, Los Angeles, and colleagues. In the first study of its kind to assess the impact of Internet searching on brain performance, researchers studied 24 men and women, aged 55 to 78, half of whom routinely used the Internet. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, the researchers found that Web surfing engages complicated brain activity, with the brain scans revealing immediate increased brain activity in regions controlling language, reading, memory and vision. Because the increased brain activity is thought to help exercise and improve brain function, the team suggests that Internet searching has a potential protective effect on brain health and cognitive ability.

Green tea is rich in catechins, an antioxidant compound, and contains high levels of EGCG, a polyphenol that has been found to reduce levels of oxidizing compounds that contribute to physical and mental fatigue. Atsushi Hozawa, from Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan, and his colleagues analyzed data relating to tea intake, psychological distress and lifestyle factors collected on 42,093 Japanese men and women, aged 40 years and older. Finding that 6.6 percent of the study population suffered from psychological stress, the researchers determined that those who drank five cups of green tea daily reduced their levels of psychological distress by 20 percent.
