According to researchers at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, regular exercise may fight depression as effectively as antidepressant drugs such as Zoloft and work better at fending off a relapse of the blues.
James A. Blumenthal of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences said, ‘The benefits of exercise are likely to endure, particularly among those who adopt it as a regular, ongoing life activity.’
The study is published in the September/October ’00 issue of Psychosomatic Medicine and confirms something those of us who weight train have known all along: When we work out regularly, we’re healthier and happier. IM
