Heading out to Culver City this weekend; it’s time again for the California State Championships which, per usual, includes a Pro Figure division. With 200 competitors stepping on stage last weekend at the Contra Costa, and with 175 entries in hand by Tuesday afternoon, promoters Jon Lindsay and Steve O’Brien are assured of a blockbuster May.
For the first time last year, the ‘Cal included both a Men’s Closed (California residents only) and an Open division. Prejudging gets underway at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with the finals set for 6:30 p.m. Check out musclecontest.com for more details.
Top National level bodybuilder Pistol Pete Ciccone will join me at the podium for the finals, as last year’s 5th place finisher in the Lightheavyweight class at the USA makes his emcee debut. No, there will NOT be an emcee posedown, in case your wondering.
In the Pro Figure category, I predict Heather Mae French defends her title in the field of 19. And, I say Pete’s fiance, Mereza DeGuzman, can battle for a top three finish. Don’t worry, Pete, I’ll be at the mic for the Pro Figure battle, so you’ll be able to enjoy the festivities instead of worrying about pronouncing some of the tonque twisters that always accompany a line-up.
