Condolances to Maria Shriver on the passing of her mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who died at 88 this morning at Cap Cod hospital in Massachusetts. I lost my mother in January a month shy of her 88th birthday, so I know the pain Maria and her family in suffering.
Ms Shriver, sister of late President John F. Kennedy, organized the first Special Olympic Games in 1968, partly inspired by her mentally disabled sister, Rosemary Kennedy. She had been in critical condition at the hospital since last week; although a diagnosis was not given, she has suffered a series of strokes in recent years.
Governor Schwarzenegger flew back with Maria when Ms Shriver was hospitalized a couple of days ago.
