Pyruvate supplements in doses of five to six grams a day have been said to promote fat loss in sedentary, obese people, but what about those engaged in regular exercise or sports? Scientists from Georgia tested the effects of six grams of pyruvate a day for 21 days on groups of football players. All groups participated in weight training during the study, and all took in about the same number of total daily calories.
The results showed no difference in fat loss between those taking the pyruvate and those taking a placebo. As a point of reference, the majority of studies that have found fat-loss effects related to pyruvate supplementation involved doses averaging 20 to 30 grams.
