Eat To Grow: Sore No More

Protein-digesting enzymes may reduce postworkout trauma.

Past studies show that using protease (protein-digesting enzymes) appears to promote the healing of training-related soft-tissue injuries. Based on those findings, researchers from Elon College in North Carolina tested the effects of protease supplements on muscle soreness and muscular contractile processes following downhill running. Downhill running emphasizes eccentric, or negative, muscle contractions, which are associated with muscle damage and soreness.

Subjects were given pancreatic enzymes, often sold as ‘digestive enzymes,’ which they took four times a day for four days. Another group took a placebo. Those taking the enzymes showed less muscular soreness and enhanced healing of muscle after intense exercise. IM
