’02 Team Universe Fitness Championships: Montgomery-Klein Wins Twin Pro Qualifications

NEW YORK—Not satisfied with earning her pro card via a second-place finish at the USA, Alabama’s Adria Montgomery-Klein picked up her second qualification of the season with an Overall victory at the NPC Team Universe Fitness Championships, which were held August 9–10 at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center. Adria, who watched identical twin sister Natalie Montgomery-Carroll enter the pushups-for-pesos ranks after taking second in the Tall class at last year’s Nationals, dominated that division in New York, winning every round for an 11-point margin of victory before facing Tracy Traskos (Short) and Peggy Sue Crawford (Medium) in the final round of quarter turns.

All three class winners will move on to the pros. As an extra reward for her efforts, Montgomery-Klein gets to represent the United States at the IFBB World Amateur Fitness Championships, to be held October 4–7 in the Czech Republic.

’02 National Figure Championships: Robbins Leads Figure Into the Pros

NEW YORK—South Carolina’s Kristie Robbins won the second annual NPC National Figure Championships on August 10 at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center, finishing at the head of a class of nine who can expect to enter the new IFBB pro figure division in 2003. Robbins, who missed out on earning a pro card in fitness at the Team Universe Championships the same night, beat out Marie Kudla (Short) and Louisa Wigand (Tall) for the top figure honors. The event attracted 80 terrifically toned women, with the top three in each class moving up to the pros.
