Another Hit for West Coast Classic!

/ Posted 06.29.2012

Thanks to the competitors, sponsors, staff and fans who all contributed in making the 2012 NPC BMR West Coast Classic another big success. Per usual, competitors came from all over the country to hit the Rosemead High stage. Men’s Overall winner Monty Rogers flew down from Spokane, WA, while Overall Figure champion (Open and Masters) Monica Labriola ventured all the way from Medina, OH. Las Vegas, NV brought Overall Bikini titlist Desiree Iaconette and Women’s Physique winner Stephanie Willes (hubby Don won the 50+). Arizona produced Novice Men’s champ Blake Webber (Mesa) and Bam Bridges, the Bikini 35+ winner (Scottsdale). If I missed any other winners from out of state, my apologies.

Make sure to check the thousands of great pictures (and some neat video’s, too) at npcwestcoast.com. To those moving on to other shows, here’s wishing you the best. And, see ya again in 2013!

WCC Set for Saturday

/ Posted 06.20.2012

Well, we’re just about here. My annual NPC BMR West Coast Classic takes place this Saturday, June 23, at Rosemead High School. Prejudging for the event begins at 11 am, finals at 6 pm sharp. Tickets can be purchased the day of the event on a first-come, first serve basis.

Once again, competitors from all over the country will be stepping on stage at the WCC, but the athletes aren’t the only ones coming a long way: IRON MAN photog Roland Balik is flying in from Dover, Delaware to snap his usual outstanding photos for both the magazine and the ironmanmagazine.com website. Michael Pinto is coming in from Seattle, Washington as the official contest photographer. On the subject of sublime photogs, Bill Comstock will be shooting for RX Muscle; Ron (Yogi) Avidan will be doing the honors for Bodybuilding.com and Getbig.com/Hardbody.com.
For more info on the event, go to www.npcwestcoast.com. See ya there!

Cutler Returns to West Coast Classic

/ Posted 05.02.2012

Hard to believe, but the 2012 version of the NPC BMR West Coast Classic is but eight weeks away. If you haven’t noticed, this season’s affair will be held at Rosemead High School on Saturday, June 23. Yup, right across the street from an In ‘N Out Burger eatery, for those who are frequent visitors to the popular restaurant.

Despite having surgery on his left biceps at the end of February, Jay Cutler will be returning as the featured guest performer. And, it could be the first time Jay flexes on stage since his operation. Will he be back on the Olympia stage in September to try and regain the Sandow from Phil Health? Perhaps he will make that announcement on stage, eh? Also performing will be the highly entertaining Jerome “Hollywood” Ferguson, who will dazzle the fans with his “Who Let the Dogs Out” routine.

Last year’s contest had a record 175 contestants sign up (233 counting crossovers); this year I’m adding four classes in Men’s Physique (including Teen Physique), and Women’s Physique to the table, so a new record could be in the works. Once again, IRON MAN Magazine is the presenting sponsor, and Publisher John Balik is donating a year’s free subscription to all the class winners.

Michael Pinto will be the official contest photographer for those wishing to buy photos. Go Golden makes its debut as the tanning sponsor, and Michael Bautista fills that role in the posing suits and hair/make-up category. For all the details on the bash, including contact numbers for Pinto, Go Golden and Bautista, log on to www.npcwestcoast.com.

I’m out.

Records Fall at 2011 NPC BMR West Coast Classic

/ Posted 06.29.2011

As the saying goes, records are made to be broken. And, that’s exactly what happened at the latest version of the NPC BMR West Coast Classic on Saturday at El Monte High School, as 175 competitors registered for the show (233 counting crossovers). The old mark was 140 (with 204 crossvers), set last year.

In addition to the high caliber athletes who stepped on stage, four-time Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler, at a whopping 293 pounds, made his final guest posing appearance before concentrating fully on training for this season’s Olympia in September. Also treating the standing room only crowd to performances were Eli Blahut, last year’s WCC overall winner, and Asia Monet Ray, Shawn Ray’s five-year-old dance wunderkind. Asia also received the "MVP–Most Valuable Performer" plaque.

Congrats to overall winners Derek Duszynski (men’s bodybuilding), Shaka Smith (men’s physique), Miguel Rubio (novice men’s bodybuilding), Ashley Horner, (figure), and Michelle Tarajcak, (bikini). Cary Dinapoli captured the women’s bodybuilding crown.

Vida Guerra not only made her NPC debut, but the well-known Cuban model/singer/actress won both her class at the overall in the bikini 35+ division. Ruby Perey took to bikini 45+ overall title. In figure, Anne-Marie Swisher, all the way out from Virginia, won the overall in the 35+ category and finished second to Horner in the open overall balloting. Rosalind Gutierrez took the masters 45+ overall championship. Petros Vardevarian toppled the field in the men’s physique 35+ category.

Other champions included Nilav Bhadra (collegiate), Steven Roseren (teen), Rick Salazar (40+), Rocky Niehk (50+) and Jack (Elvis) Scow (60+). Chris Haynes, who was one of the NPC’s greatest bodybuilders in the 1980s as Chris Porter, has come out of a 25-year retirement to compete in figure; Chris won the masters 50+

Special thanks to all the sponsors, especially Binais Begovic, owner of BMR Nutrition, who came on board this year at title sponsor, and IRON MAN Magazine, once again presenting sponsor. John Balik, Publisher of IM, donated a one-year subcription to the magazine to all class winners.

Elena Viera, who competed in masters figure 45+ despite enduring several bouts of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with breast cancer three weeks into her training, received the Hans Hopstaken "Most Inspirational" award from Brian Whelan, owner of Foothill Gym in Monrovia. Whelen, who competed in the show (his wife Jennifer won two classes in figure), took over the gym when Hopstaken passed away several years ago.

Stacy Cooper, who runs the "Stacey Cooper Fitness Bootycamp, Santa Barbara", was presented with the "Team Award" for having the most competitors in the contest with 11. It was quite a sight to see all 11team members file on stage to join Stacey and share in the celebration.

The contest was moved from the school auditorium to the boy’s gym when state inspectors weren’t able to get down to the school before the show to give official clearance for the new air conditioning that was installed several months earlier. Still, things turned out well, and the event was a major success.

Thumbs up to all who took part in the WCC. And, hope to see ya next year!
