Star Search! IRONMAN Model Hunt Wants You

That’s the word on the NPC IRONMAN Figure extravaganza we’re holding in conjunction with the IM Pro Invitational men’s bodybuilding battle on February 15. We’re giving away what no other NPC Figure competition can offer: a chance to pose for world-famous photographer Michael Neveux and appear in a Hardbody layout in IRONMAN.

Yes, you read that right: Mike Neveux, the guy whose photos of Timea Majorova, Monica Brant, Laurie Vaniman, Brenda Kelly, Amy Lynn, Jennifer Micheli, et al., have kept your boyfriends, husbands and brothers salivating for years, will shoot Hardbody pictorials of the class winners of this event. Not to mention the fact that the entire West Coast bodybuilding world will be watching at the Marsee Auditorium at El Camino College (16007 Crenshaw Blvd., Torrance, CA 90506), when the Ultimate Beef Jay Cutler faces off against such prime cuts as Chris Cormier, Ahmad Haidar, Melvin Anthony, Quincy Taylor, Darrem Charles, Tommi Thorvildsen and J.D. Dawadu. That includes not just Neveux, Mits Okabe, Jerry Fredrick, me and L.T. and rest of the writers and photographers whose work appears in IRONMAN but also our counterparts at all the other major physique publications.

Why shouldn’t they get a chance to look at Y.O. U.?
If you’ve been busting your butt in the gym thinking about getting into figure competition, you’ll never have a better opportunity to get those glorious glutes onstage and be seen. The deadline for entering is February 10, but my insider sources say you can register on contest day. To download competitor info and an official entry form, go here.

Don’t miss out on this fabulous opportunity to get some experience—and maybe even go straight to the top.

Speaking of Figure Shows: More Ways for You to Go Pro

Now that the pro figure circuit is finally here, the NPC is bending over backward to fill its lineups with the best bodies—and booties—the amateur ranks have to offer. Having conferred pro status on the top three in each class at the ’01 and ’02 Figure Nationals, the organization is seeking to spread the wealth, in terms of opportunities for competitors to enter pro qualifiers and opportunities for promoters to enjoy an uptick in competitor numbers.

This year there will be three pro qualifiers. In addition to the Figure Nationals—held in New York on August 9–10 in conjunction with the Team Universe—where the top three in each class will again get the call, the federation will offer the not so elusive pro cards to the Overall winner at the Junior USA in North Charleston, South Carolina, on April 12 and to class winners at the Junior Nationals on June 13–14 in Chicago. Multiply those digits by four—as there are now four height classes at national-level figure shows—and you’ve got a lot of hot gym-trained bods hoping to get invited to the ’04 Figure International.

Speaking of the International

Add Iris Kyle and Vickie Gates to the previously announced lineup for the Ms. International, which is set to take place in Columbus, Ohio, on February 28, a.k.a. women’s day at Arnold Fitness Weekend. That means defending champ Yaxeni Oriquen will have a fight on her hands in the Heavyweight class, and all bets are off regarding who will pose down likely repeat Lightweight winner Valentine Chepiga for the Overall. For competitor lists—and comments—on the Ms., Fitness and Figure International competitions, see Pump & Circumstance in the March ’03 IRONMAN, on newsstands now.
