Stay Lean When You?re Clean

Eating like a pro can make you grow?fat, that is

Natural bodybuilders and weight trainees are pretty savvy when it comes to knowing that they shouldn’t train with the same frequency and volume as athletes who use anabolic/androgenic steroids. Without the enhanced recuperative effects the drugs offer, natural trainees need less work and more rest.

Another difference between the two camps isn’t always so well-known, and it involves nutrition. Steroid-using bodybuilders can assimilate far more protein and calories than their drug-free peers. Still, you see the dietary regimens of the pros published all the time, and the amounts of food they eat are outrageous, particularly in the off-season.

It isn’t uncommon for drug-using men in the 250-to-275-pound range to chug down 600 or more grams of protein, 1,000 grams of carbs and well over 6,000 calories a day. Thanks to the pharmaceuticals, they grow muscle and gain only minimal amounts of fat.

Some natural trainees emulate those dietary regimens and wind up grossly overweight. If you’re drug-free, don’t try to eat as if you were jacked up on three or four grams of gear a week. You’ll get big all right, but not the kind of big you were aiming for. Keep an eye on your bodyfat levels and adjust your intake accordingly so you don’t end up a lard-ass instead of a lean, mean muscle machine.
