Glutamine may be a potent cancer therapy.

New studies suggest that the so-called nonessential amino acid glutamine may be a potent cancer therapy because of its ability to increase glutathione, a powerful immune booster and antioxidant. The Journal of Parenteral Enteral Nutrition reported that glutamine can spur natural killer cell activity, which cuts the rate of tumor growth.

As a bodybuilder you should take extra glutamine to preserve muscle tissue, as it keeps muscle from being broken down for energy. Glutamine also increases the muscles’ ability to store sugar, or glycogen.

Older bodybuilders will like the fact that glutamine has been shown to increase growth hormone. A 1997 study in Nutriton Science News stated that glutamine may slow the effects of aging by not only maintaining muscle mass but also reducing fat stores.

Many meal replacements and protein supplements now include glutamine. Look for glutamine peptide, the amino’s most absorbable and potent form.
