Call me a dork, but I love stopping by newsstands around the country, even globally, to pick up the latest issue of Iron Man magazine. The other day, I took so long I was asked by the gentlemen who was running the newsstand to either buy the magazine or leave it. I said, “Sir, you are so right. I’ll buy two copies!” (I have no idea why I did it, as I have probably read every word in that issue at least 10 times.) It suddenly hit me how easily accessible and cheap information is today. Gym memberships start at $10 a month, and healthy food is more popular than ever. Even fast-food chain restaurants sell low-calorie meals. Despite all that, more than one-third (34.9 percent or 78.6 million) of U.S. adults are obese according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S. was $147 billion in 2008; the medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight.
When one-third of the nation is obese, it slowly becomes the new normal, and when something is normal, people no longer point it out as a problem. I didn’t mean to open this issue sounding pessimistic, but I really feel there is a need to remind you, the reader, that you are a great ambassador for health and fitness and an extended arm of Iron Man’s vision and motto to ”Inspire Inform & Transform” whenever given the opportunity. Believe me, your example is making a bigger impact than you possibly can imagine.
