Fruit for Fat Loss?

Citrus may help slice and dice your physique.

You may remember the diet from years ago that had people eating lots of grapefruit. It all sounded like wishful thinking, but maybe there was some science behind it after all. According to an item in the November ’09 Prevention, “Researchers believe the flavonoid naringenin, abundant in citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruit, might promote weight loss.” That’s according to new animal research performed at the University of Western Ontario. The scientists gave animals on a high-fat diet a naringenin supplement, and it lowered blood sugar and cholesterol and fended off insulin resistance. The flavonoid also encouraged the liver to burn excess fat rather than store it. Fat-loss supplements will no doubt be including naringenin in the very near future.
