7309-eat6Coffee can do a lot more for you than boost your workout performance. According to Bottom Line Publications’ booklet Coffee Cuts Stroke Risk, it can, um, cut stroke risk. But there’s more.

• Lower diabetes risk. “More than 20 studies have found that coffee drinkers are less likely to get diabetes than those who don’t drink coffee.”

• Healthier brain. “People who drink coffee have short-term improvements in memory and other cognitive functions.”

• Less depression. “According to a recent study, subjects who drank two or three cups of regular coffee a day were 15 percent less likely to develop depression over a 10-year period.”

• Liver protection. Oral steroid users take note: “Coffee protects the liver…. Among people who had developed chronic liver disease from heavy alcohol intake, those who drank one to three cups of coffee per day were about 40 percent less likely to develop cirrhosis than those who did not drink coffee.”

• Less pain (more intense workouts). “The caffeine in coffee raises the body’s level of dopamine, which causes pleasurable sensations that counteract pain.”
