Leg workout and NPC West Texas Classic

Diana's Favorite Pose

We had a great weekend at the NPC West Texas Classic in Lubbock, Texas.  But, before I get into that I need to report on my training.  My legs are still burning as I sit here typing!

Last week I was very inspired by Diana.  One day she was pressed for time during her leg workout and decided to speed up the process by doing 2 sets of 50 reps on the leg press, rather than her usual 4 sets of 15.  She said her legs were on fire and were sore for days.  So, I decided to try a leg workout that I haven’t done in probably a decade.  10 or 11 years ago I got on a kick where I did sets of 100 reps with 450 lbs on the leg press.  My buddies got wind of it and for a while it was a weekly running contest to see who could get the most reps with 450.  The most I ever did was 127 reps in one set, but I haven’t done that workout for probably about 10 years.  So, last Monday I posted on Facebook that I was going to atttempt a set of 100 reps with 450 lbs on the leg press.  I figured that would put extra pressure on me to not wimp out, as people would want to know how many reps I did.  I started with 90 lbs for a set of 20 and added 90 lbs each set until I got to 45o.  At 540 lbs I dropped it back to sets of 10 and contiued to add 90 lbs per set until I reached 810 for 10 reps.  Then I pulled 4 plates off of each side to leave me 450 lbs on the leg press machine.  I got psyched up and went for it.  At about 45 reps my legs were burning like crazy, but no way I was going to stop!  When I got to 60 I knew there was no possible way I was going to get to 100, but I had to crank out some more reps.  I just kept telling myself, “just 5 more”! At 75 there was nothing left and it was all I could do to push weight up high enough to re-rack it.  Disappointed that I didn’t get to 100, I imposed a “penalty set” on myself.  I rested for about 5 minutes and hit it again.  About 30 reps into the set I realized that I wasn’t wearing my Amourbite mouthpiece and was wondering if it would make any difference.  I racked the weight at 65 reps.  I went back to my office and pulled out my Armourbite.  Out of morbid curiosity I had to do another set.  As fried as my legs were at that point, I still cranked out a third set of 60 reps!  I followed that we 4 sets of squats, 4 sets of leg curls and 5 sets of standing calf raises (I could barely keep my legs straight).  Needless to say, my legs were still sore on Friday.

My client showed up unexpectedly and I had to get back to work.  Trained clients for 5 straight hours.  Now I have to get to dinner with some friends.

To be continued tomorrow!

2009 NPC Team Universe

Team U 002redu

Team U 005redu

Well, I did it!  I accomplished another major goal by winning the welterweight class at the Team Universe last weekend!  My final amateur contest will be the IFBB World Championships in Qatar the first week of November.  Next year I will take my pro card and compete as an IFBB Pro in the under 202 class.

New York was a blast!  It’s fun to get to see alot of my old friends from the WNBF….now ex-WNBF pros.  Wendell Floyd got his pro card by winning the men’s bodybuilding overall title.  Angela Mraz got her IFBB Pro card by placing 2nd in her class in the open division Figure and also winning the Masters Figure overall.  Also competing in the show were Marlon Hospedales and Robert Brown in the heavyweight class.  There were more former WNBF’ers  but those are the ones that come to mind immediately.  I also had a nice conversation with former WNBF Chairman, Steve Downs.  Steve is now the marketing director for MHP and is loving his new job!  Steve told me that he was sorry for how things went down with my suspension 3 years ago.  From our conversation I got the impression that he didn’t agree with suspending athletes for appearing in other magazines, but he had to go along with it because it was his job.  I’m guessing that the suspension of (4-time WNBF World Figure Champion) Angela Mraz this year was the last straw for Steve.  He resigned his position at Chelo Publishing and the WNBF about a month later.  It was nice to talk to Steve.  I’ve always liked the guy!

I have to thank my girlfriend and biggest fan, Diana Hurley for helping live my dreams this year.  The trip to NYC for the Team Universe was my birthday present from Diana.  At the beginning of the year I was trying to decide whether to compete in the North American or the Team U.  Financially I couldn’t afford to do both.  So Diana gave me the NYC trip for my birthday so that I  could do both!  She’s also gotten my butt out of bed to do cardio…usually at 5am for the past 6 weeks to make sure that I was ready.  And, she dieted right along with me all summer and is in really great shape!  Next weekend we are headed to Raliegh, NC so that Diana can do a photo shoot with my good friend (and extraordinary photographer) Lisa Brewer.  The weekend after that we’ll travel to Chicago to attend Diana’s 25th class reunion while she’s in the best shape of her life!  Coincidence???  I don’t think so!!!!  :-)

NPC Europa

/ Posted 08.17.2009

This past Saturday I placed 2nd in the Open Middleweight class and 1st in the over 50 class at the NPC Europa.    Eric Hannah who won the middleweights looked incredible!  I didn’t enter the over 40 division because last year the 40+ guys told me to move up to the the 50+ class and don’t come back!  LOL!

Unfortunately my camera battery died before the show even started.  I’ll be receiving some photos from the show at some point, but for now here are some from a couple days prior.

I will be competing in the IFBB North American on August 28th and 29th.  So, Sunday morning it was right back to work with a 2 mile fast walk in Dallas.  Last night it was 30 minutes on the Lifecycle.  I would have  rather  lifted, but everything was sore from repeated pumping up and posing on Saturday.  I bet I did at least 500 pushups and 150 pullups during the course of pumpiong up for my divisions in prejudging and at the night show.  This morning it was a 2 mile walk at 5am, clients all morning, then a great leg workout at noon.  I was feeling a little weak from the weekend and sore in the lower back and knees, but I ended up lifting pretty well today.

Deep Squats  135X10, 185X8, 225X6, 275X4, 315X2, 335X2, 225X16

Leg Press  270X20, 450X20, 540X20, 630X20, 720X20, 810X20

Supersetted Leg Ext and Leg Curls  4 supersets 12-15 reps per set

It’s Alive!!!!

/ Posted 04.17.2009

Wow!  It’s been a couple months since I’ve posted a blog!  Sorry, but this man has been freakin’ busy!!!  And, my daughter has pretty much taken over the laptop computer that I got for Christmas, so my only computer time is in my office.

So, what have I been up to???  Well, the NPC Texas Shredder Classic is just around the corner….a week from tomorrow!  Every year it sucks my life in like a black hole!!!  If I’m not training clients, working out, eating or sleeping, I’m working on stuff for the Shredder Classic.  I’m ready to get my life back!  But the ’09 Shredder is looking great!!!  Right now I’ve got over 130 entries  and some awesome competitors returning from last years show.  Last year Novice midwt champ Craig Ritchie and Novice hvywt champ Kene Chinweze brought the house down in one of the best posedowns I’ve seen!  Craig ended up with the title, but Kene is back for another shot, and man…that guy is huge!!!!  ’08 women’s overall champ Mary Moran-Parker is returning to defend her title and will get some stiff competition from Jorah Messbarger.  Both are in fantastic shape!  With over 40 women entered in Figure and another dozen in the new Bikini division we are sure to see some seriously hot bodies on stage!

You see how the Shredder Classic is sucking me in????

On to my life and times.  Well, the econ0my doesn’t seem to be affecting my personal training business at all.  I’m busier than ever!  Plus, beginning the first weekend of February I started holding weekly posing classes for Bodybuilding and Figure competitors every Saturday at Hyde Park Gym.  I’ve even worked quite a number of Sundays to fit in everybody that wants to work with me.  On March 7th my girlfriend, Diana, threw me a great 50th birthday party at The Broken Spoke.  My friend, Dale Watson was playing and he got me up onstage to do Folsom Prison Blues with him.  It was great!  So many of my good friends and family came out….it was an awesome party!

Then on March 21st I traveled to Eagle River, Alaska (near Anchorage) to conduct a posing clinic at CMC Personal Training.  Shawn and Cinzia Clapp are such wonderful people and so passionate about natural bodybuilding, figure and fitness that the weekend was an absolute blast!!!  The only drawback was that I had to cram all of my clients into 4 days that week, so I was working 7am to 10pm pretty much every day.  The travel to and from Alaska took me all day Friday and all day Monday.  I trained clients from early in the morning until late at night Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, then left again on Friday morning for my guest posing gig at the NPC West Texas Classic in Lubbock.  My friends Andrew and Kathleen Zamora did a masterful job on the show!  And, my daughter was competing in her first figure competition!  She looked fantastic placed 4th in a very tough class, which included my former training partner Abby Marie (winner), and my friend/client JoAnn Richey who placed second in her very first show!

I threw in a photo of my daughter Blythe from when she was about 14 months old…..already showing an interest in the weights!!!

So, it was a great time in Lubbock, but then it was back to work with lots to do and lots to catch up on!

But, my training is going great in spite of the lower back and tricep tendon issues that I’ve been battling.  I’m going to defend my Hyde Park Gym Push/Pull title on May 2nd (the week after the Shredder Classic).  Last year I benched 290 and deadlifted 450 in the meet.  This week I bench 280 and deadlifted 460…with 2 more weeks to prepare.  Right now I’m weighing about 177  and I pinched at 4.1% bodyfat today.  I’m pretty excited about how things are going!

Sunday Posing Practice

/ Posted 07.29.2008

Sunday at noon I met with David and Hank to do some posing practice.  David is competing this weekend at the Pro Natural Mid-America.  He’s looking really good for his pro debut.  The photos were taken with a flash and because it’s close-up the flash washes out alot of detail.  David’s quads, glutes, triceps and shoulders are deeply striated, but it doesn’t show up well on these pics.

Even having done very little cardio last week and hosting a birthday party on Saturday (no workout at all on Saturday), Diana and I both felt that my legs were looking even harder than they did at the Masters Nationals.  At this rate I’m going to be freaky shredded by the Team Universe.
